The brief

What it had to do

I set myself the brief of an industrial distributor: dozens of near-identical parts, where a buyer has to find thread, length, drive, torque and pack price at a glance.

In a catalogue like this, one wrong number is a returned order. The data has to go onto the page untouched.

Inside the InDesign file

How it is built

  • Data Merge from a 56-row spreadsheet: reference, standard, thread, length, drive, torque, pack size, price and a line drawing for every part
  • One product card with the same fields in the same order, for all 56 parts
  • A reference code key on page 3, so a buyer can read any code without the index
  • Two numbered sections with full-bleed openers, then dimensional reference, technical data, a reference index and ordering terms
  • IBM Plex Sans for reading and Plex Mono for every figure

“Every number is set in a monospaced face. Thread pitches, lengths and prices line up down the page, so a buyer comparing M8 × 25 with M8 × 40 reads straight across.”

What this shows

Adding a size or changing a price is a spreadsheet edit and a re-merge. The layout does not move.
